Finnish Lapland

Finnish Lapland works on two different timescales in the same trip. During the day, the forest is almost completely silent: ski tracks disappear into birch trees loaded with snow, a snowy owl sits motionless on a branch, a lynx crosses between the pines without looking back. The animals here move on their own schedule and you either find them or you don't. After dark, the scale changes completely. Rovaniemi and Santa Claus Village come alive in the polar night with warm cabin lights and decorated paths under a sky that stays dark for most of the day. The Arctic Circle marker stands at the edge of the village, with a signpost pointing to Madrid, Rome, Amsterdam: cities that feel like a different planet from here.
